The old note steered readers away from the source archives, but building
from source is a supported way to run OpenNest and should be encouraged.

Console --plan-cutting and MCP plan_cutting/apply_cutting_plan run the
desktop's CuttingPlanBatch: capture, plan, then an all-or-nothing apply.
Settings come from an explicit JSON file or the plates' identical saved
settings, never defaults. Unverified plans need per-call acceptance,
which is not posting consent. Console --no-fill plans a loaded nest as
is; a blocked plan exits 2 and saves nothing. Scrap cut-offs stay
desktop-only.

Remove a private part reference from the lead-in notes, fix the Options and
New menu paths, say that release ZIPs never auto-update, describe current
Cincinnati CL ordering, clamp validation coverage and empty-plate saving,
list every built-in engine, and drop internal decision labels.
The cut simulation treated Display-layer contour moves (what cutting
strategies emit) as head-up travel, so plates with assigned lead-ins were
timed as rapids. They now cut, matching the verifier and posts, and
suppressed moves are left out.
Cut time now follows the CI Fiber post: closed clockwise contours and
cut-offs take an outside feed, other contours a hole feed, and etch-only
contours can be skipped like its SkipScribe default. The settings are
shared by Calculate Cut Time and the simulator, and plate/nest times now
always come from the simulation.

A Grbl-style lookahead planner re-times the cut simulation with
trapezoidal acceleration, junction-deviation corner speeds and a
centripetal cap on arcs. Machines gain cut/rapid acceleration and corner
deviation in Machine Configuration, with placeholder values until the
controller's are entered. The simulator and Calculate Cut Time pick the
machine (or full speed), and the simulator shows the live head speed.

Plate > Simulate Cutting replays the active plate in cutting order: the
torch traces cuts, rapids and pierces timed like Calculate Cut Time, with
play/pause, scrubbing, 1x-250x speed, step and part/cutout jumps. Parts
the torch has not reached are drawn muted.

Circles packs every part as its minimum enclosing circle at centers tangent
to two of the work-area walls, placed discs and clamp keep-outs, bottom-left
and left-bottom, with hexagonal and square lattice seeds. It bids only when
every part fills at least 0.8 of its enclosing circle and otherwise returns
everything unplaced at once. Default runs it as a third candidate.
Rectangles' sheet-by-sheet stock loop moves to NestingEngines/SheetByStock
(Rectangles output unchanged) and Default's candidate scoring and commit
forwarding become shared helpers. Circles also runs the whole job preferring
each offered stock and keeps the best result. Contract tests take shapes an
engine can override.
Synthetic round jobs, salvage-credited: Circles wins or ties all six with
valid layouts; Default cost falls about 4% versus Irregular alone.

Select entities in the CAD converter (click, or drag a window/crossing
box) and right-click to exclude/include them or set them to cut, etch or
display only, regardless of their DXF layer. Delete excludes the
selection.
Roles are stored per source entity on the drawing and persisted in the
entity set as an optional `roles` map. Display-only geometry is kept out
of the program, so posts, nesting and verification never see it; placed
parts draw it as a dashed overlay. Load-time scribe repair skips
etch-layer entities set to cut. Per-entity exclusions now survive filter
changes.

The overlap crosshair sat on the pair's area centroid. For a split,
holed or concave overlap, that point can be off the red material:
between two patches, in a hole, or inside a curve.
PlateOverlapPair.Marker is a point inside the pair's largest island.
It is the island's pole of inaccessibility (PolyLabel), searched to a
tenth of the island's area/perimeter within a 4096-cell budget. If
that bounded search does not land inside (a long thin sliver), the
marker falls back to the midpoint of the widest interior run of a
horizontal scan line placed between vertex heights.
The overlay crosshair, marker hit testing, hover coordinates
("Marker:") and the cutting-inspection ring now use the marker.
Centroid stays the true area centroid. View > Overlap Check > Display
> Centroids is now labelled Markers.
Before the marker existed, its call sites used the centroid. Two
patches, a covered frame, a half annulus and a thin crescent then put
it off the material; now all four land on it. Disabling the scan-line
fallback fails its test. On the 389-plate corpus, markers add about
0.4 ms per overlapping pair; pair and area results are unchanged.
Default is the engine every front end uses when none is named. It now runs
Irregular, then Rectangles, checks both layouts with NestLayoutCheck and keeps
the best: valid first, then fewest unplaced parts, then lowest salvage-credited
cost; ties keep Irregular. A candidate that throws or returns nothing is
skipped, cancellation stops the search, and only the chosen layout's plate
commits are reported. Neither engine wins every job in the lane benchmarks,
and Rectangles adds little time while also covering Irregular's invalid
layouts.
The registry lists Default first and no longer maps the name to Fill; fill
strategy callers still read Default as Fill. A future circle/ring engine joins
as another candidate.
The multi-phase lattice fill (linear, pairs, rectangle best-fit, remainder) is
no longer meant to be the engine used by default, so it gets a name for what
it does. The registry lists it as Fill and maps the old name Default to it;
PlateFillService, PlateNesterFactory and NestJobOptions use Fill, and every
fill-strategy caller still accepts Default. Console --autonest now validates
engine names through NestingEngineRegistry.ResolveName so renamed names work.
Layouts are unchanged: Default and Fill resolve to the same fillers and the
golden layouts pass under the new name.
Pushes to master only ran the Linux job, which can cross-compile but
not execute OpenNest.WinForms.Tests; Windows test runs happened only on
release branches and tags. Add a windows-2022 job to the cross-platform
workflow that runs OpenNest.WinForms.Tests and OpenNest.FrontEnd.Tests
in Release on every master push and pull request, runs both projects
before failing, and uploads their TRX results.
GitHub (ajisaacs/OpenNest) now owns branches, tags and pull requests.
Gitea keeps a read-only pull mirror that syncs hourly and refuses pushes,
so PRs merged on GitHub are no longer closed by the old Gitea push mirror.
Adds docs/nesting-engines.md: which engine suits which jobs, the old plug-in
names the registry maps, retired engines, and the rule that an engine change
lands only when it beats that engine's current benchmark result with every
layout valid. README, release and automatic-nesting docs drop the bundled
plug-in wording; AGENTS.md now places built-in engines in
OpenNest.Engine/NestingEngines and keeps only external plug-ins out of the
solution.
Nest windows now rerun the overlap check once the layout has been
unchanged for 0.5 s, instead of leaving 'Overlaps: not checked'. Edits
show 'Overlaps: check pending...'; drags are caught by the paint-time
pose stamp, collection edits by their events. The check waits while a
mouse button, modal dialog or fill is active, supersedes a running check
when the layout moves again, and does not retry a canceled or failed
layout until it changes. Rechecks use the incremental analyzer, so only
the moved parts' neighbors are recomputed.
Automatic results update only the canvas label (the status bar keeps the
last command's message) and keep Display > Off. Check Active Plate still
runs immediately. InvalidateOverlapCheck now also drops cached material.
New post-processor plugin OpenNest.Posts.CincinnatiCIFiber for the CI
Fiber laser family (nLight CLX / Beckhoff TF5200 / Precitec ProCutter,
e.g. the CI Fiber 4020 8kW). Named by machine family, not table size.
Emits the machine program contract of the Cincinnati-supplied sample NC
(12992-4SS_NEST.nc): V.E.* header, restart jump, per-part V.E.R4 blocks,
per-contour N labels with V.E.R3, skippable /L macro lines (L0/L2+G41
interior, L4+G42 exterior, L6 cut-on, ZHSOFF cut-end), G162 incremental
arc I/J, trimmed 3-decimal spaceless coordinates, CRLF, M50/M30/%.
Contour classification (interior vs exterior) derives from the material
side of the closed cut path, not hardcoded winding. SubProgramCall holes
are flattened to sheet coordinates (rotation-safe). Arc lead-ins are
rejected per TF5200 13.2.4.1 (first motion block after G41/G42 selection
must be linear). Table envelope (default 160.25 x 81.25 in) validated.
Tests: structure golden on a square-with-hole nest, rotated-hole flatten,
coordinate format, arc-lead-in rejection, table validation, suppressed/
scribe skipping, plus a SkippableFact regression against the real sample
NC (109 parts, 2071 contours, L2=1962, L4=109, perimeter vertices match
within 0.001). Fixtures configure through OpenNest.Tests/test-config.json
and the regression skips when absent.
Group the Cincinnati and GravographIS plugin projects in a Posts/
folder so new machine posts have one home. Project names, namespaces,
and the runtime Posts/ deploy target are unchanged; only relative
paths in the solution and project references move.
Long whole-job solves ran silently, so there was no way to tell a slow
engine from a hung one until the timeout fired. --progress hands each
solve a JobProgressLog that prints [job/engine] lines for start, finish
(or failure/timeout), every plate commit, and candidate evaluations
throttled to one line per 2 s so parallel runs stay readable.

Engines now live in https://git.thecozycat.net/aj/OpenNest-Engines (history
carried over) so they can be published independently, and so a copy of
OpenNest handed to a model for an engine-building run contains no
competing engines. Engines still load at runtime from an Engines/ folder
next to the app/benchmark output; nothing in the solution referenced them.

Drop deep engine/validator/benchmark internals (covered by CLAUDE.md and
code comments) and per-option reference tables in favor of a quick-start
level guide.
One-off helper utilities don't belong in the repo. PepNestExport moved to
/home/aj/src/PepNestExport as a standalone companion project; NestDxfJob and
StreamGravographJob are removed (recoverable from history).
Plugin engines (Opus55, Qwen, Terra) each add two projects at the repo
root, and more are coming; at a dozen they would outnumber the core
projects. They are also a different kind of thing: out-of-solution,
runtime-loaded plugins. Grouping them under Engines/ keeps the root
readable.
Engines/Directory.Build.props now holds the shared TFM, nullable and
implicit-usings settings and the OpenNest.Engine reference, so a new
engine's csproj is nearly empty. The tests/ compile exclusion lives in
Directory.Build.targets because a removal in .props runs before the SDK
adds its default Compile glob and has no effect.
Build-Engines.ps1 replaces the per-README manual build-and-copy steps
for deploying engines into the benchmark's runtime Engines/ folder.

Converts a PepApi year of PEP nests into .nest files that keep PEP's own
placements, so OpenNest.Benchmark can score PEP as its Baseline row.
Micro-joint tabs: PEP leaves tabs uncut by jumping them with a rapid, at a
contour's seam or partway along it (a cutout cut as two halves 0.02 apart).
The part still occupies that material, so open cut runs are chained end to
start across gaps up to 0.25 and bridged with a cut line, but only where
they close into a loop, so separate contours that lie close together (two
circles 0.25 apart) are never merged. Previously only seam tabs were closed,
leaving mid-contour tabbed cutouts open and the validator reading them as
garbage regions.
